We can fix the "false connection" and the domain problem at the same time by creating a "friendly" window. If we use a multiple of 1(9.4)=9.4 for the window width, the vertical asymptote at x = 1 and the domain issue at x = -3 will correspond to pixel centers since each pixel will be spaced 0.1 unit. Set Xmin=-4.7 and Xmax=4.7 (4.7 is half of 9.4). Also, narrow the window in the y-direction. Adjust your WINDOW as shown, then re-graph the function. Now look very carefully at the graph near x = -3. You will see a "hole" there showing that the function is not defined at that value of x. (This is sometimes referred to as a removable discontinuity.) |
