The center of the hyperbola is (-5, 1), the transverse axis (vertical) is six units long and the conjugate axis (horizontal) is eight units long. Based on these measurements, adjust the window settings as shown and select ZOOM ZSquare. This will give us a "true" look at the shape of the hyperbola. Because the hyperbola has a vertical transverse axis, no gaps appear in the graph. If the hyperbola was oriented the other way, most likely gaps would appear in the left and right turns of the hyperbola, and we would create a "friendly" window to correct it (as we have shown on previous examples). |
