Now repeat this process, but this time enter values of x that are slightly greater than but getting closer and closer to 1.5. For example, we will use x = 2, 1.6, 1.51, 1.501 and 1.5001. From the results we observe that as x approaches the value 1.5 from the right, the function values get increasingly large in the positive direction. We say that y approaches positive infinity, or that y increases without bound. Whenever a function exhibits this type of behavior near a fixed value of x, we say that the function has a vertical asymptote at that x value. For this function, there is a vertical asymptote at x = 1.5. |
