To approximate the single x-intercept within this cycle, we again use the CALC zero command. To set the Left Bound, Right Bound and Guess, you may enter a value directly without having to move the cursor. Just type in the value of x you want for each question, and a prompt will appear as you do. We used a left bound of 0.5, a right bound of 0.85, and a guess of 0.75. Make sure the x-values you enter when answering these questions are valid for the current window (between Xmin and Xmax). The coordinates of the zero (x-intercept) are then displayed. We observe the function is increasing over each cycle, and that the y-values will be negative if x < 0.79 and positive if x > 0.79. Therefore, f(x) < 0 on the interval (-3, 0.79) and f(x) > 0 on the interval (0.79, 1), approximately (for this cycle). |
